The People Behind Your Project: Chad Feldmann

You told us you want to know more about the people behind your projects. You got it. This is the seventh profile in that series.

Chad Feldmann Far Reach Partner

Chad Feldmann

How do you help clients?
I write code, work with complex databases, and provide technical leadership for Hired Hand Software.

What led you to here?
Jason (a Far Reach partner) and our lunch group at CUNA Mutual Group in Waverly had been discussing it for several years. It finally got to a point where it was time to go off and give it a try. I actually remember the day. I was at my cubicle and Jason asked, “Are you in?”

Tell us about your background or training.
I got an internship at CUNA. Lana Wrage (a Far Reach partner) was my mentor at CUNA. I went from developing client service applications there to a team that had Kate Washut and Chris Rouw (both Far Reach partners) on it. That’s where I got lots of web development experience.

What is your work mantra?
It’s more of a life mantra: Hard work pays off. I come from a very blue-collar family, and I’m proud of that. I saw my parents work hard and they instilled in me a strong work ethic, and I try to instill that in my kids.

What guides you?
There are several things. Integrity and honesty was something my dad instilled in me. I’m active in both Rotary and Boy Scouts. The Scout Law and the Four-way Test help guide me through difficult decisions.  In general, I don’t want to disrespect my name—or our company’s name—and the people surrounded by it.

At a young age I was told to leave a place better than I found it. I take that approach to the systems and businesses I help build and support, as well as the organizations with which I am involved.

I am a lifelong learner. I love consuming content from a variety of mediums and applying it to my work and life. My kids just love it when my wife and I incorporate lessons learned into our family (insert sarcasm).

What are you reading?
I’m currently reading Greater Than Yourself by Steve Farber. I’m also reading The Pragmatic Programmer from a technical perspective. My daughter and I are reading The Hobbit together.

Who do you follow?
Seth Godin. I like his stuff. He always has a different way of looking at things. It’s very short; I like reading those. I don’t want to devote 15 minutes to a blog post.

Most of what I read is on Facebook—like Business Insider and I F’ing Love Science. They have good book lists and interesting articles.

What’s your favorite app?
Spotify. It’s a common interest that my kids and I all share. We love music and discovering new music, and we enjoying sharing lists with each other.

Where do you see the field going in 1-3 years?
From a coding perspective, as frameworks, APIs, and libraries continue to evolve, developers will be able to build and ship at a much more rapid pace. I would venture to say the Smart TV will be mainstream in 3 years and Far Reach will have developed a Smart TV app within 3 years.
