Business analyst/QA tester
How do you help clients?
I help identify what their application should do and document it so the developers know what to build. Once the application has been built, I test it.
What led you to here?
I worked with the Far Reach partners at a previous job. I have a lot of respect for their talent, what they do, and who they are.
I also liked that I would have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects—from custom software to websites to mobile apps.
Tell us about your background or training.
I started at an insurance company as a customer service rep. Then I became a team leader, and later I worked in quality assurance and business analysis.
My degree is in communication studies, which helps me when discussing project details with clients.
What is your work mantra?
Dig into the details. That’s pretty much what I do.
My job as a business analyst is to get people to think about the small details. And when I test applications for quality assurance, I try to test them like I’ve never seen them before. I dig into it just like an actual user would.
What guides you?
I think good customer service is important. I want clients and their customers to be happy with what they get.
When I do business with other places, the ones that have amazing customer service always stand out in my mind. They make me want to come back.
What are you reading?
I’m reading Don’t Make Me Think, Revisited: A Common Sense Approach to Web and Mobile Usability by Steve Krug. It opens your eyes to looking at things from the user’s perspective.
Who do you follow?
I like to follow Karl Wiegers and Kupe Kupersmith, who write for the BA Times e-newsletter. They offer insight into different ways to do business analysis.
What’s your favorite app?
Out of Milk. It’s a shopping list app. Now I don’t have to go back to the store right away because I forgot something.
Where do you see the field going in 1-3 years?
More and more stuff will be mobile. People like to have their technology with them.
