It’s easy to think about business software as a single purchase or transaction. A tool is selected or built, it’s then rolled out to the team, and then it’s expected to solve a problem indefinitely.
But Far Reach clients that get the most value from their custom software tend to think about it differently. For companies like Launch Fundraising, Peterson Genetics, Powers Manufacturing, and iEmergent, software isn’t just an expense on the books; it’s a critical part of how the business operates and competes. These organizations treat custom software as a strategic asset—something that evolves alongside their processes, supports their unique strengths, and improves over time.
This mindset makes a difference in the long-term value a company sees from its technology investments.
Custom Software as a Competitive Advantage
Many businesses rely on the same off-the-shelf software as their competitors. SaaS platforms are useful but, by definition, are designed to serve broad audiences and standardized workflows.
That’s not always a problem, especially for common functions like accounting, marketing, and sales. But when a company’s competitive advantage comes from doing something differently, the technology behind those unique processes shouldn’t dictate limitations or require clunky workarounds.
Companies that look at software as a strategic asset recognize that the systems they build should reinforce what makes them unique. Custom software allows them to:
- Build workflows that match their actual operations
- Automate processes that competitors still perform manually
- Capture and analyze data in ways that support better decisions
- Create customer experiences tailored to their business model
Instead of forcing their operations to fit a generic system, these organizations design systems that fit the way they work. Over time, that alignment compounds. The software becomes a reflection of the organization’s knowledge, processes, and expertise.
A Long-Term Investment, Not a One-Time Project
Another key mindset shift is understanding that software is never truly “finished.”
Successful organizations approach custom software as an ongoing investment rather than a one-and-done project. The initial version of a platform is only the starting point.
As the business grows, custom software can grow with it:
- New features support evolving workflows
- Integrations connect new systems and data sources
- Enhancements improve usability and performance
- Maintenance keeps systems secure and reliable
Many Far Reach clients have worked with us for years—and in several cases, more than a decade—to continuously improve their platforms. Their custom applications become a living part of the business that can adapt as the organization evolves.
This long-term view allows companies to prioritize progress over perfection. Instead of waiting for a massive system overhaul every five years, they improve their systems incrementally, release by release.
Thinking of Software as a Team Member
Another helpful mental shift is to think about custom software like another member of the team.
When a new employee is hired, there are ongoing costs like salary, benefits, training, and management. That person is also expected to improve performance and efficiency over time and contribute to the company’s goals based on their job description.
Building a custom platform can be similar to hiring a specialized team member whose job is to:
- Automate repetitive work
- Support complex decision-making
- Manage critical business data
- Enable employees to work more efficiently
Just like a team member, software requires ongoing investment. Instead of raises, training, and morale boosters, software requires ongoing maintenance, enhancements, and new features to keep it productive as things change.
Organizations that understand this can plan accordingly by allocating budget and time not just for the initial build, but also for the long-term role the software will play within the company.
Long-Time Far Reach Clients
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are some clients who have worked with us for many years to build and iterate on custom software systems that play a central role in how they do business.
Launch Fundraising
Leading Edge Fundraising’s Launch platform launched under a different name in 2018. Since then, we’ve partnered to adapt to COVID restrictions, add new features like Launch-a-Thon, integrate SMS and Apple Pay, and reduce downtime during deployments.
The custom system is a central differentiator in Leading Edge’s business, allowing them to stay ahead of other sports fundraising platforms and even garnering white label deals.
Peterson Genetics
Peterson Genetics initially worked with Far Reach to take its seed variety data from printed binder to digital portal. Since 2014, we’ve worked together to take the platform so much further.
We’ve expanded the types of data available in the platform and enhanced how that data can be viewed and analyzed. We’ve also done behind-the-scenes updates to make data upload and management easier and faster.
Leadership at Peterson Genetics liked the portal—and working with Far Reach—so much that when they needed to implement a new ERP, they came to us to build and integrate it with their existing system.
Their custom portal drives how Peterson Genetics engages with both internal and external stakeholders, and there are always updates on the horizon.
Powers Manufacturing
A local uniform manufacturer, Powers Manufacturing, has worked with Far Reach since 2015 when we partnered on its custom uniform builder. Since then we’ve done plenty of updates, both frontend and backend, to improve the system, adapt to changing user expectations, and refine internal processes.
The products that Powers manufactures are custom, so custom software has been the right choice to build a system around their unique workflows.
iEmergent
iEmergent and Far Reach have been partners since 2013 when they approached us about building a mapping tool, Mortgage MarketSmart, to help users analyze their proprietary mortgage forecasts. We built a prototype, a first version that got the platform into the market, and an upgraded version that’s still in use (and being enhanced) today.
Without Mortgage MarketSmart, iEmergent’s data would be hard to access and analyze—and nearly impossible to scale. But with a custom system built around the data, iEmergent can give clients self-serve access to their data and even use the tool themselves to do custom consulting.
iEmergent’s data is unlike anything else in the mortgage lending industry. That’s why the only option for them is a custom-built software solution tailored to their unique, and growing, datasets.
Why They Stay
You can check out the quotes in our case studies to see specific examples from our clients about why they stay. But in general, clients continue working with us for many reasons:
- They’re happy with the process and the outcome
- The strategic approach we take at every stage of the process
- There’s alignment in both of our core values
- We have passion for seeing our clients succeed, and helping them do so
- Our iterative Agile/Scrum development process
- The legacy knowledge of developers who build and maintain a system
- We become an extension of their team
We like developing long-term relationships with clients where we can learn their business, understand their needs, and build custom systems that give them competitive advantages like no other approach could.
The Long-Term Perspective
Companies that gain the most value from custom software rarely treat it as a short-term solution. They treat it as critical infrastructure and a worthwhile investment.
Over time, their systems become deeply integrated with the organization’s operations, data, and strategy. Improvements compound year after year, building capabilities that competitors using generic tools simply cannot replicate.
That’s why many of Far Reach’s client partnerships last for so long. We might build software, but we do that as a means of helping our clients do what they do better and faster.
When organizations approach custom software with this mindset, the results extend beyond a single project as technology becomes part of their long-term competitive advantage.
